Review:
I hate it when comedies try to be realistic. For some reason the writer will feel that they know the secret of a man who fully connect with the audience and then finally someone will. Of course, this does not work, and always comes off as artificial and forced players. Fortunately this does not happen so much here with Jennifer Westfeld directorial debut (she also wrote). There are moments when you can drive a little, but mostly it actually deals with things in a refreshingly honest way, and I was surprised of course that.Of space (two thirtysomething best friends decide to stop waiting and have a child together), it is straight from the rom-com horse crap guide, but there are a few turns along the way which I thought was surprisingly dark and really a cheap, fun idea. There are some scenes that were crucial in the silliness of it all, and I was impressed with how Westfeld scenario delved into it. Then again, the movie does not end up being pretty standard rom-com at the end of it all, so it was quite necessary impacted by itself in end.Westfeldt gathered a group of friends their players to play in parts, but unfortunately did not have the heart to cast someone other than himself in the lead. Her co-leader Adam Scott and the supporting cast are all fantastic here, especially Jon Hamm, who steals the whole movie, as far as I'm concerned, but the director himself is very cold and robotic players. It was hard to feel anything for her or her dynamic with Scott when I could not even buy a real person. Overall, though, this is a solid film of its kind with a slightly better written, much cast for the most part, and unfortunately a god awful ending.
