Review:
Shaun of the Dead, it is quite surprising and brilliant piece of work that I suspect will be the allocation of a direct hit cult status as word of mouth snowballs this film deserved recognition.Simon Pegg, as the joint author and the biggest star of the film, comic force for some time, especially in fantasy BBC2 series Hippies (which inexplicably bombed in the ratings), and the cult Channel 4 series Spaced. Both programs indicated Peggs saliently dead pan comic way (and writing skills) to come to full fruition in Shaun of the Dead.In nut shell, this film is a romantic comedy with zombies (or Zom-Rom-com) that appears for no good reason apparent (although some tantalizing clues offered). The film is a wonderful blend of fun, violent and poignant.Pegg fell like one hell of a serious loser in this film. And not in the American way, I am a loser, but I work in TV and Jennifer Aniston as my wife's kind of a loser as portrayed in waste like Bruce Almighty or dozens of other American loser movies. Peggs Shaun is a real loser and highly recognizable, he is an ordinary man who works for an electrical retailer and his life is just boring and disappointing, and that's where all the comedy comes out in this film. There are two scenes in the film that seems to sum up (and also shine in the light of Simon Pegg as a very smart and funny writer) and both scenes simply involve Shaun walking to the nearby corner shop. The first time Shaun plods semi-coma at the store we just get the feeling that he is a loser. But by the time the film shows him the same way, we realize that there is much more happening! The scene is played with a beautiful subtleness that has to be one of the funniest scenes I've ever seen in a movie! Not that this film is subtle but there are a variety of visual comedy, one liners, and (best of) a few digs at other films of the horror genre. The most fun a subtle snipe at Boyle `28 days later - see if you can spot it The only problem with the review of this film is that there are so many funny moments in it, that it is difficult to write about up without spoiling! the film. I can only say is that I can not remember a film once this consistently funny probably five or six serious laugh-out-loud moments. It was a pleasure to look at, and my only regret is that I can never see this film for the first time - every viewing will always be a repetition viewing.Shaun of the Dead is not a lot of people - the language of the beginning is strong and the violence was quite wonderful to 15-certified film (in the UK). This film is definitely going to be appreciated by horror fans who know a huge back catalog of horror films. It will also be appreciated by teenagers (who filled the theater when I saw the movie was excellent, as they laughed loudest). Finally, I had some criticism of this film, and it is a wasted talent in the film. Black Books (channel four) star Dylan Moran was a bit lost and so was Martin Freeman (of BBC2s The Office) - that would have made a terrible zombie! Also, I see Matt Lucas (of BBC3s Little Britain) in this film? I'm not sure if I laugh too hard maybe? These problems are so small and can easily be forgiven. My suggestion is to go and slowly move down to your local cinema this film to see and Simon Pegg gives the money and recognition he deserves so he can go and do more films this good including the British newspapers suggested as his next project: From Dusk Till Shaun.
